Staedtler Pens Review – Recommended By Johanna Basford
I used a set of Prismacolor Premier Pencils on my first coloring project. I was just getting started and chose them for the variety of colors available. They lay the coloring down beautifully, but I found it difficult to use them in the small detailed places. So, I went in search of a pen or marker that would give me smooth, bold colors with no bleed through and still be able to color small details.
That is how I discovered Staedtler Pens. Staedtler Triplus Fineliners come in a variety of colors and are ideal for coloring. These pens are long and narrow, with a triangular shape that many colorists find very comfortable to use. Staedtler Pens are extremely versatile and are a favorite among beginners and seasoned colorists alike.
Staedtler Pens Review
Staedtler Pens are Dry Safe, which means that you can leave this pen uncapped for days, pick it back up, and start coloring. This is usually a huge no-no for colored pens, but it’s a huge bonus if you forget to replace the cap on one of your pens.
Minimal Bleed Through
Staedtler Pens have a smaller thinner tip and don’t bleed as much as other pens and markers. The ink dries pretty quickly, and there is little problem with bleed through in books with thicker pages like the Secret Garden or the Enchanted Forest.
Staedtler Pens come in 36 beautiful colors that are extremely bold and vivid. The range of colors are some of the best of any set that we have had found.
Features and Benefits
- Minimal Bleed
- True Colors
- Dry Safe

Customer Reviews and Scores
Staedtler Pens are extremely versatile. They will help you to create stunning effects, have minimal bleed, are dry safe, and the colors amazingly brilliant.
I found 186 customer reviews at the time of writing, and they had awarded Staedtler Pens 4.5 stars out of a possible 5 on average.
The customer reviews on Amazon are positive overall, but there were a few negative points raised. One customer said, “I was quite disappointed with these markers. They are very streaky–you can see the lines in your work and they don’t give a nice smooth finish. On a positive note though, the colors are very nice and they don’t bleed through the back side of the paper.” Some other colorists find this to be a problem when coloring larger areas. One Amazon reviewer said, “Awesome colors, don’t bleed through the page, very fine tip so can color the details, therefore not too good coloring bigger space”
Other customers said, “I also recommend these pens for those who use adult coloring books because the colors are extremely vivid, and you can leave the caps off without the pens drying out, so you can switch between as many colors as long and as often as you want.” “Great Pens for Coloring.” “I love these pens.” “Love to color with these pens! This pen set is wonderful. I love it. I highly recommend it.” “These pens are amazing!” “I highly recommend these pens. I’ve been buying all types of pens, trying to find the right ones, and I think my search is finally over. Enjoy!” “These pens are wonderful. Like many, I bought these pens under Johanna Basford’s recommendation.”
The fact that Johanna Basford recommends these makes it very easy for us to recommend Staedtler Pens as well.
Staedtler Pens have beautiful colors, a fine tip that can be used for intricate detail, and they do not bleed through on moderately thick paper like the Secret Garden. We highly recommend these pens for anyone who wants to add a splash of color to their coloring books.
